Father arrested for ‘honour killing’

GREATER NOIDA: In an alleged case of honour killing, a 16-year-old girl and a boy reportedly in a relationship for the last few years, were strangled to death by the girl’s father in Greater Noida in a fit of rage. He later surrendered to the police confessing to the murders.

According to the police, the victims were planning to marry but it was being opposed by the family. “The man identified as Gulab (26), a resident of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, was living as tenant in the girl’s house in Ganghola village in Greater Noida for the last six years,” said Brijesh Kumar Singh, Superintendent of Police, Greater Noida. “He was working with a musical band,” he said.

Slowly, the two became friends and their relationship soon turned to love. However, the girl’s father did not approve of it. “On Friday around 9.30 pm things came to a head, when the girl’s father identified as Rajkumar saw the two in a compromising situation,” Singh said. Though angry, he again tried to convince his daughter to forget about Gulab. However, when his daughter insisted on marrying Gulab, he allegedly killed them, police said.

Furious, Rajkumar hatched a plan to kill them both. He first sent his daughter on an errand and while she was away, he strangled Gulab with his gamcha (garment). When his daughter returned, he strangled her, too, police said. Rajkumar, later confessed to murdering the two, to the village head.

Police were alerted and on a complaint lodged by the village head, Rajkumar was taken into custody and remanded to judicial custody. The police, meanwhile, have sent the two bodies for a post-mortem.
