BAREILLY: In a suspected case of honour killing in Bisharatgunj village in Bareilly, the body of a 24-year-old youth was found hanging from a tree. The victim Manoj Kumar had earlier eloped with a local girl. Kumar’s family has lodged a complaint against the girl’s family at Bisharatgunj police station and has alleged that he went missing after the girl was taken back to her house by her parents.
Kumar, a resident of ward seven in Bisharatgunj tehsil, looked after the management of a temple in Ramnagar in Nainital as a priest. In the past six months, he had been staying away from his house.
Kumar’s affair with a local girl had been opposed by both the families and on April 22, he had eloped with her. Meanwhile, the girl’s family came to know that the couple was residing in Rampur after which they went there and got her back on Tuesday. However, Kumar went missing and his body was found hanging from a tree at a cremation spot near his native village a day later.
Dismissing the theory of honor killing, Tejvir Singh, station officer at Bisharatgunj police station, said, “It is a case of suicide and allegations of honour killing are baseless. Moreover, the postmortem report has confirmed death due to hanging.”
