Father held for honour killing of minor daughter

RAMANATHAPURAM: The father of a 16-year-old girl was arrested on Thursday, for allegedly murdering her for honour as she reportedly eloped a man from another caste. Divya, 16, daughter of Allirajan of Kakkur near Mudukulathor in Ramanathapuram district was in love with Saranraj, 24, from her neighbouring village Kathaiyan. Her parents had opposed this match and warned the man against trying to see Divya. On May 16, she disappeared from her house and Allirajan lodged a complaint against Saranraj with the police accusing him of having abducted his daughter.

Police launched a search for the couple. On June 11, the minor girl was produced in the Sivaganga court by the police and was sent back with her parents as she was a minor. Meanwhile, Saranraj obtained bail in the case filed against him by her father.

Under these circumstances, Allirajan informed the police in Mudukulathor police that his daughter had committed suicide on July 7. Police personnel became.

Suspicious about Allirajan’s statements police sent the body for postmortem. They also sought the opinion of forensic experts.

The postmortem report which was given on Wednesday, stated that the girl had consumed poison before her death and that she also had been suffocated to death.

Police interrogated Allirajan and his wife Rani on receiving the report and Allirajan confessed to having suffocated his daughter with a pillow on the night of June 6, because she was adamant about marrying Saranraj who belonged to another caste.

Police arrested Allirajan for murdering his daughter.

This caused a flutter in the village on Thursday.
