Hearing on HCP Reveals Honour Killing of Youth

A horrendous case of honour killing of a Madurai-based young man, who married a girl, braving opposition from her family, has come to light during the hearing on a habeas corpus writ petition in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.

Recording the submission of the Thoothukudi police, Justices A Selvam and V S Ravi directed the police to provide evidence of the death of the youth and adjourned the case.

The victim, Sriram, a resident of Madurai had fallen in love with Sonia, hailing from Srivaikundam in Thoothukudi. Last year, the girl’s father Isakkimuthu strongly opposed their affair and also made arrangements to forcibly marry Sonia off to a groom chosen by him. On learning about this, the young lovers eloped to Chennai and got married. However, soon Sonia’s family members managed to locate them. They succeeded in separating the couple and took Sonia away to an undisclosed location.

In the meantime, Sriram filed a HCP in the Madurai Bench of the Madras HC, seeking a direction to the police to trace his wife.

During the pendency of the petition, Sriram was allegedly threatened by Isakkimuthu to withdraw it. Later, on Oct 8 last year, Sriram received a call from Isakkimuthu, asking him to come to Srivaikundam alone and take his wife back. Thereafter, there was no information regarding Sriram. Fearing that he could have been harmed, Sriram’s sister Selvi moved a HCP, seeking a direction to the police to produce her brother before the court.
