Seven held in ‘honour killing’ case in Dwarka

Two days after a couple was hacked to death in a suspected case of honour killing in Gadhaka village of Kalyanpur taluka in Devbhoomi Dwarka district, police arrested seven members of the woman’s family on Wednesday.

Poori Chauhan (24) and her husband Govind Chauhan (38) were allegedly attacked with axes, scythes and wooden clubs by seven members of Poori’s family on Monday evening. Two days after the double murder, Kalyanpur police arrested Poori’s father Jesa Chauhan and mother Kantu as well as as two uncles, an aunt and two nephews.  “The seven were arrested from Gadhka village on Wednesday afternoon. During primary interrogation, they said that they killed the couple as their marriage was not acceptable to them,” Kalyanpur police sub-inspector Keshvalal Joshi said.

Police said Poori had eloped with her uncle Govind four years ago and the couple had got married in court. They had also lived for some time in Surendranagar, but had returned to Gadhka after thinking that the protesting family members had been pacified. The deceased couple, farmers by profession, is survived by their three-year-old daughter Guddi, police said.

The PSI said that the arrested persons would be produced in court on Thursday. They have been booked for murder.
