Honour killing: Girl’s family sets her boyfriend on fire

Bhopal: In a shocking case of honour attack, a boy was set ablaze by the family of his girlfriend on April 14. The girl’s family was allegedly miffed with their relationship that led to such a drastic step. The police have snubbed the allegations citing that the boy’s condition was a result of self-immolation.

The victim identified as Shwetank Jain had gone to meet his girlfriend Sophie Singhai at her residence in the afternoon on April 14. He was talking to Sophie’s mother and sister in the courtyard of their house. He was offered a cold drink by Sophie’s mother as suddenly someone from behind poured petrol on him and set him ablaze.

His body caught fire while he cried for help but no one came to help him. He was diagnosed with 60 per cent body burns by the doctor and is believed to be in a critical state.

The victim, an engineer, was also threatened by Sophie’s father Abhay Singhai in the past. Sophie’s family had restricted her to meet Shwetank for almost 20-25 days. This forced Shwetank to check on her at their residence.

The victim’s family has alleged that the police are trying to snub the matter as Abhay Singhai is a state-level politician. They stated that Shwetank can never attempt a suicide or self-immolation, it’s a case of honour attack.

The victim identified as Shwetank Jain was in a relationship with Sophie Singhai, both belong to the same community.
