In a case of honour killing, agriculture extension officer Lalita, 29, was killed by her brother Gangaiah at Neravada village in Kadapa district as she wanted to marry a man from another caste.

The murder which took place on April 28 came to light on Sunday. Gangaiah had placed the body in a gunny bag and buried it near the Penna river.

Police said that Ganganna of Neravada had a son and four daughters. Lalita, the third daughter, fell in love with Nageswara Rao while doing PhD in SV university in Tirupati. After completing PhD, Lalita worked as an agriculture extension officer at Chagalamarri in Kurnool district.

Lalita and Nageswara Rao used to meet frequently and Lalita told her parents that she wanted to marry him. Gangaiah opposed this, and quarrelled with Lalita frequently on the issue. He decided to kill her, and along with a relative Pullaiah, choked Lalita with a lungi and killed her.

Later, they took the body to a river and buried it in the sand. When Lalita was not seen for many days, her younger sister Varalakshmi lodged a complaint with the police. Gangaiah admitted to killing Lalita when he was taken for questioning and showed the place where the body was buried. deccan chronicle
