GURGAON: A suspected case of honour killing was reported from Jharsa village on Saturday wherein a friend of the 21-year-old victim claimed that the woman was murdered by her family for fostering a relationship with a boy. The family, however, claims that she died after an epileptic attack on Friday. A case has been registered against the victim’s father.
According to the police, the victim died on Friday afternoon and was cremated within hours by her family. On Saturday, the police received a call from a woman identifying herself as the victim’s friend, alleging that she had been murdered by her family in the name of honour. The caller, according to sources, told the police that the victim was in a relationship with a boy and this was the cause for the murder. Acting on her complaint, the police reached the victim’s house and questioned the family members. “They were dodgy in their replies,” said an investigator.
“The girl was cremated in hurry, without a postmortem. She died on Friday afternoon and was cremated by 7pm. They said they were on the way to the hospital when the death took place, but the friend refutes the claim,” said a senior police officer. After questioning the family, the police visited the cremation ground and confiscated the victim’s ashes.
“The caller said she would not register a complaint fearing for her life,” said Vijay Kumar, SHO, Sadar police station. He added that the caller has received threat calls.
“We need more information to know if it was a case of honour killing. A murder case has been registered and an investigation is in process,” said Alok Mittal, commissioner of police.
