Honour killing in Nanded: Parents of 17-year-old held

The police on Saturday arrested a couple in Nanded city for allegedly murdering their 17-year-old daughter in what is believed to be an honour killing case. The police said after realising that their daughter Mayuri was having an affair with a boy, Madhav Jaibhai, 40, and Chaaya Jaibhai, 36, killed her in October 2013 while she was asleep.

Three months after the murder, sub-divisional officer Vijay Kabade on Friday received a letter from unknown person which gave details about the incident. It said Mayuri’s death was not “natural” as claimed by her parents; she was “murdered”.

Narrating the sequence of events which took place on October 15, 2013, the police said Mayuri’s parents — teachers in Nanded Zilla Parishad schools in Wagli and Warkhed villages — got to know that their daughter was in a relationship. Fearing that it would damage their image in society, they decided to kill her.

Mayuri, a class 12 student of Blue Bells Junior College, was fast asleep that night when her father tied her hands and legs. Her mother smothered her face with a pillow with full force till she died, the police said. Around 4.30am, they called up their relatives in Bori Umraj village and informed them that Mayuri passed away as she had high fever. They asked them to make arrangements for the last rites and took Mayuri’s body to their native village at 6.30am. Two hours later, she was cremated. “We don’t know who her lover was,” the police said.
