Honour killing? Lawyers boycott courts to protest killing

SUKKUR: The legal fraternity in Jacobabad stayed away from courts on Wednesday to protest the murder of a former president of the Jacobabad District Bar Association, Haji Anwar Ali Jakhrani.

The bullet-riddled body of the victim was found near Dargah Pir Afzal Shah within the Airport police limits on Wednesday morning. Police rushed to the scene and shifted the body to Civil Hospital for a post-mortem. Hundreds of lawyers and Jakhrani tribesmen gathered outside the hospital and shouted slogans against the police for their failure to protect the lives and properties of the people.

Later, the body was handed over to the relatives, who took it to their native village, Mataro Khan Jakhrani, where the victim was laid to rest. In the meantime, a man named Ali Ahmed Talani reached the Saddar police station in Jacobabad to surrender himself along with his dagger. He confessed to killing the lawyer, stating that that the victim was involved in an affair with his sister and he killed him for honour. However, police have yet to register the case.

On the other hand, sources claimed that the murder of the lawyer is a mystery, since the body bore bullet wounds while the man, who claims to be the murderer, has surrendered a dagger before the police.

The association’s president, Ahmed Nawaz Pechuho, condemned the murder of his colleague. He said that the lawyer was murdered through a conspiracy and urged the police to solve the mystery. The murder has sparked anger among the legal fraternity and they have decided to boycott the court proceedings for three days, he added.
