Honour killing : Young lovers hacked to death

In a gruesome incident of honour killing, a young woman was hacked to death along with her lover reportedly by members of her own family in a village on the outskirts of Brahmapur city in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Saturday.

The incident took place only hours before the 20-year old girl was to be married off to a person chosen by her family against her wishes.

According to reports, the girl’s family had thrown a dinner party on Saturday night ahead of her wedding to which her boyfriend as well as his family were also invited, police said.

However, the girl, who was madly in love with her boyfriend fled her home and reached his house around midnight, after the feast was over.

As soon as the family members came to know about this, two bothers of the girl along with a relative reached the boy’s house at Haladiapadar on the outskirts of the city and asked her to return home.

The girl reportedly refused to oblige them and said she would marry none other than her boyfriend.

Enraged, the brothers attacked both of them with sharp weapons and killed them inside the house in front of the boy’s widowed mother, the police said.

The bodies, lying in a pool of blood inside the house when the police reached the spot this morning, were later taken for post mortem.

Meanwhile, the police have launched a manhunt to nab the assailants.

“The police have detained the girl’s father and started interrogation. Efforts are on to nab the killers at the earliest possible”, said Brahmapur SP AK Singh.
