Muzaffarnagar: Girl survives honour killing attempt by family

Muzaffarnagar: A 21-year-old girl survived an honour killing attempt allegedly by her family members here, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Tuesday when the girl’s family members allegedly pushed her into the Ganga canal at Ratenpuri village in the district, they said.

The girl was rescued from the canal by some villagers, after they heard her cries, police said.

Sangita had eloped with her boyfriend Jogender (23) and got married to him a month back. Later, she returned home on the promise of a social marriage by her family members, following which she was beaten up and pushed into Ganga canal situated near Satheri village, they said.

The girl’s family had opposed her relationship and marriage, as the boy belonged to a different caste, they said.

A case of attempt to murder has been registered against the girl’s cousin brothers Satish, Kashmira and Vinod, police said, adding that a man hunt has been launched to nab them.

Meanwhile, the accused in the Budhana village honour killing case, which took place two days back have been arrested, police said today.

The victim girl’s brothers Ahsan and Sonu were arrested last evening for killing their sister, they said, adding that both of them have confessed to killing their sister for bringing bad repute to the family.

The victim was strangulated to death by her brothers on May 5 while her boyfriend Mubarik Hasan hailing from the same village committed suicide after the incident, police said.
