A case of kidnap of a minor girl and forced marriage was registered by the S.S. Colony police here on Saturday.
Based on a complaint from the girl’s father, Alagarsami of S.S Colony, Commissioner of Police Sanjay Mathur had directed the police to register the case.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that Alagarsami’s relatives forced him to marry off his 13-year-old daughter, studying Standard IX, to a 21-year-old Tamilarasan, son of Ravi Asari of the same areas.
Alagarsami initially told his relatives that they would be in trouble if they married off the minor girl, and asked them to wait till she completed 18 years of age.
Under these circumstances, the girl, who went to school did not return home three days ago, and Alagarsami lodged a complaint with the S.S. Colony police. Immediately, a special team was formed, and the team secured the girl. The police said Tamilarasan forcibly married the girl in a temple after kidnapping her to an undisclosed destination. “The youth, a blacksmith, was keen on marrying her despite knowing that she was a minor,” the police said, adding the girl was sent to a government home.
The police said the girl would remain in the home for a few more days until the investigation was completed. The police had detained the youth and his parents for interrogation. A police officer said a case had been registered under Section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child by parents or persons having care of it) among others of the Indian Penal Code.
